Robert Hagan's Newsletter - January 2010

Better let you know what’s happening in the world of art as I know it…and that’s a pretty restricted world at that! For the last month its been about 1 square mile, a house, a studio, a car and 3  hungry Jack Russels. But that’s how it goes when there’s a recession and work to do.

If you‘ve been watching my web site you will know there’s been a fair bit of activity both from what’s been going on there to my You Tube site to my blog which swings from one random thought to another. The You Tube site has been the focus of my attention with a number of video clips taken from various projects underway or completed..

There’s 3 new ones going on there in the next 24 hours..one is taken from a series of 6 clips I did a few years back in San Diego involving a blue bucket and some of the basics of learning to paint. The one showing is how to draw a bucket and then paint it. Others go into reflected color, aerial perspective and so on but I did them for those who want to start from scratch.

Also on You Tube are 2 paintings I did with the camera set on a 20 second timer. Now these look great. You see me paint each compressed into a blinding 2 minutes. When I paint I generally work on 2-4 paintings at a time –going from one to another. This allows me to continue on one while the others are drying. Often painting ‘wet on wet’ is a tough ask for a good result to gallery standard so I like to let the paint dry a certain amount before revisiting a painting in progress.  One of these is a young woman in a pink dress pausing in a pond and it turned out a great painting. Its not dissimilar to one I did a few years back which everyone loved. To see it done in just a few minutes is riveting to say the least. The other painting is a backlight one with a couple of trees behind in fall and a young mother wandering by with her child in her arms. It’s a top painting and is likewise interesting in just 2 minutes.

I will be adding an On-line Gallery to my web site and a ebay account where I will ‘park’ paintings for you to see before they head off to the galleries for sale. These will have a price attached and if you are interested you can buy them. Some will be small and some big but the subjects will vary as I float over the various areas that keep me inspired. If I remember, I will video them as I paint them, so you can see the ‘artist in action’ in 2 minute blasts! After a suitable period and depending on demand these will go to one of the galleries that handle my paintings.

Next week I’m back to filming a short documentary on the Erawan Elephant Shrine. This is an amazing 3 headed elephant in Bangkok built by one man and is about 8 stories high and made from copper. It was supposed to have 33 heads but that was too many they decided. If you ever get to see it I think you would agree. Anyhow if you are interested in the result of the exercise let me know and I’ll get it up somewhere for you to see. By the way it was built by the same person who built the Sanctuary of Truth. If you want to see the 30 minute episode of that go to my TV site
www.spalshofcolor.tv and click on download and sit back. Its one of the best I’ve done I reckon. So does Discovery HD.

Until next time.

Happy painting and a great 2010
